  1. Welcome to S-FTP version 1.09 (or simple FTP)!

  3. The author of this software is Keith Cotroneo. I call S-FTP Week-End-Ware
  4. ....because I really only have time to work on it during the week ends.

  6. I am a Dean at a college in Oregon. Computers are a hobby of mine and lately
  7. I have spent some time on the Internet. The FTP utilities that I have tried
  8. have not suited my needs very well and Web browser don't work well for batch
  9. downloads. So I wrote this program for my own use.
  10. .
  11. What I wanted was something that would allow me to:
  12. .
  13.         *logon the popular ftp sites without hassle
  14.         *read .txt information about files in the directories easily
  15.         *perform batch downloads
  16.         *do an occasional upload
  17. .
  18. S-FTP does those things for me.
  19. .
  20. If it works for you, you are welcome to use it with the following provisions:

  22.         1) There is absolutely no warranty with this software. You use it
  23.         completely at your own risk. This means that you agree that if you
  24.         use the software and it somehow screws up your system or you lose files,
  25.         that is your problem, not mine.
  26.         2) You understand that this software was developed using the RXFTP
  27.         package and agree to the additional license arrangements listed in the
  28.         license.txt file.
  29.         3) You MUST register after 15 days of use of this product. To do so,
  30.         send me email or snail mail telling me your name, address, email
  31.         address, and then please provide comments on how I should improve the
  32.         product. I *do* use suggestions to make changes. I can be reached below:

  44. Changes in S-FTP since version 1.00:
  45.         1) Text files in the Directory List are now loaded to the viewer by
  46.         single clicking on the file to highlight it and then clicking the view
  47.         push button.
  48.         2) The Download List may now be populated from a viewed text file. This
  49.         works for files such as the Hobbes 00index.txt files. For this function
  50.         to work, the filename must be in the first position in the line of the
  51.         text file.
  52.         3) While files are downloading, you can now continue to populate the
  53.         download list box. You can download files while you are viewing the
  54.         directory list or 00index.txt files in the viewer and continue to
  55.         transfer file names to the Download List. Files will be downloaded in
  56.         the order of transfer to the download list.
  57.         4) Lengthy processes, such as logon and downloading are now placed
  58.         in separate threads. This makes the application much more responsive
  59.         and doesn't lock the application while processes are completed.
  60.         5) Added download path setting and config menu option.
  61.         6) Added Delete Host and Add Host buttons to allow configuring the
  62.         host list.
  63.         7) Added several progress indicators to tell the user what is happening.
  64.         8) S-FTP will now download files from outside the current remote
  65.         directory. You can build the download list from various directories
  66.         or 00index.txt files. The download list will remember paths to those
  67.         files and retrieve them when you download.
  68.         9) Added capability to configure host user name, password, default
  69.         directory.
  70.         10) Improved the logon process. It is more streamlined and provides
  71.         better progress reporting.

  75.         12) Added capability to resize the main SFTP window.
  76.         13) Added audible beep to signify completion of download list.

  85.         18) Fixed the date sorting routine. It didn't work right. Now if
  86.         the Date Sort box is checked, the directory list will be downloaded

  93. To use S-FTP:
  94.         1) Unzip the S-FTP.ZIP file to the directory in which you want the
  95.         product to reside.
  96.         2) Copy the file rxftp.dll to a directory in your DLL path.
  97.         3) Edit the hosts.txt file to include any hosts that you visit.
  98.         4) Create an object on the desktop if you want one.
  99.         5) Start your tcp client or internet connection.
  100.         6) Run S-Ftp by typing sftp at the command prompt or by clicking the object.
  101.         7) Click on the Config menu, choose Path, type in download path setting in
  102.         the textbox, click change button, double click upper left of window to
  103.         close.
  104.         8) Double click on the host name you wish to visit.
  105.         9) Click the logon button and wait for the connection. When connected,
  106.         the root directory listing will load into the directory list box.
  107.         10) Review limitations section at end of this help file.

  109. To add new hosts:
  110.         1) Click Add Host.
  111.         2) A window pops up, complete the required information for the Host.
  112.         3) Click the Add Button to save the information.
  113.         4) Click Done to exit the window.
  114. .
  115. To delete hosts:
  116.         1) Highlight the host in the Host listbox that you want to delete by
  117.         single clicking on it. Click the Delete Host button. The host is
  118.         removed from the listbox.

  120. To change a directory:
  121.         1) Double click on the directory in the directory listbox to which you
  122.         want to change (english, can you believe it?), or enter the directory
  123.         in the Directory textbox and click on the Dir Button.
  124. .
  125. To back up to a parent directory:
  126.         1) Click the << button.
  127. .
  128. To date/time sort a directory listing:
  129.         1) Click the Date Sort check box.
  130.         2) Now, when directory lists are downloaded, they will be sorted in
  131.         descending date order.
  132.         * This function was requested by users to make it easy to check an
  133.         /incoming directory and see the newest files first.
  134. .
  135. To download files:
  136.         1) Double click on the file(s) in the directory listbox that you
  137.         want to download.
  138.         2) Each file will be transfered to the download listbox.
  139.         3) When you are done choosing files, click on the download button
  140.         to begin receiving the files.They will be placed in the directory
  141.         specified by your path configuration in the config menu.
  142.         4) When the list is cleared, all your files have been transfered.
  143.         *Note: effective in version 1.02, you may continue to build the
  144.         download list while downloading is in progress. New files added to
  145.         the download list while downloading will be transfered in the
  146.         order appended to the download list.

  148.         If you are downloading from a site, such as Hobbes, that maintains
  149.         file listing descriptions in text files (ie. 00index.txt), you can
  150.         add files to the Download List from a viewed text file. To do so:
  151.         1) Highlight the text file (ie. 00index.txt) in the Directory List
  152.         by single clicking on it.
  153.         2) Click the View button to load the text file into the viewer.
  154.         3) Double click on the files in the viewer that you wish to transfer
  155.         to the Download list.
  156.         *Note: effective in version 1.02, you may continue to build the
  157.         download list while downloading is in progress. New files added to
  158.         the download list while downloading.

  160. To delete files from the download list:
  161.         1) Double click on the files in the Download Listbox that you want to
  162.         remove.
  163.                         or
  164.         3) Click on the Clear List button to remove all files.

  166. To view text files on a remote site:
  167.         1) Single click on a text file in the directory listbox to highlight the
  168.         file that you want to view.
  169.         2) Click the View push button.
  170.         *Note the view push button will only act on files in the directory list.
  171.         Files in the Download list are not affected.

  173.         3) Click the .txt Dblclick check box.
  174.         4) With the .txt Dblclick check box selected, a double click on a file
  175.         in the directory list with a .txt extension will automatically load
  176.         the file to the viewer. This feature was requested by a user.

  178. To upload a file:
  179.         1) Single click on the Upload menu.
  180.         2) Single click on either Ascii (if text file) or Binary (executable).
  181.         3) Choose the file from the file dialog. Click OK or double click on
  182.         the file.
  183.         4) In the next upload window, click Yes.
  184.         5) Wait for the upload to conclude. No file progress checking is shown.
  185.         6) If the upload is successful, the directory list will be downloaded.

  187. To conduct simultaneous uploads, downloads, etc.:
  188.         1) Begin your first upload or download with SFTP.
  189.         2) Load a second copy of SFTP.
  190.         3) Initiate your second upload or download.

  192. To save window size and position:
  193.         1) Click Config on the menu.
  194.         2) Click Save Size and Position.
  195. .
  196. Limitations:
  197.         1) The download progress indicator only works when the download path
  198.         is set to an HPFS drive. If anyone has a rexx routine that will check
  199.         file size on a FAT drive while the file is open, please email it to
  200.         me.
  201.         2) One user reported difficulty downloading files from a direct network
  202.         connection. If you use this software directly of a network, instead of
  203.         through a modem, please let me know how it works for you off the
  204.         network.
  205.         3) Currently, SFTP is set up to handle Unix servers. Other server types
  206.         are not supported.
